Personal Philosophy

Hey Group,

This week we are just going to answer 3 questions that involve your personal philosophy, interdisciplinary aspects and career goals. Interdisciplinary is every where you look, from a V8 Splash (veggies & fruit) to a remixed song (pop & techno). Taking parts of two different things and putting them together to make one great thing is exactly what we are doing with our Interdisciplinary Degree. You all have been doing such a great job with this blog! Keep it up.

This week's questions are:
  1. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
  2. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
  3. How have your career goals altered?

24 comments:

  1. 1. My personal philosophy towards my professional life has always been to do whatever it takes to get the job done. I continued my education off and on over the years and took at least 2 company training classes per year.
    2. My philosophy was not interdisciplinary. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and although that involves math and science it all comes under the umbrella of Engineering.
    3. My career goals have not altered. I'm nearing retirement and those goals have altered and are interdisciplinary. I intend to use my Chemistry and Anthropology Education along with my Engineering experience to do volunteer work with the state of Florida on environmental issues.

  2. I have not really had a career per se more like a bunch of “jobs”. It is partly because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I grew up; I jumped around from major to major. When I was working I did my best at whatever it was. I believe in doing a good job the first time and putting your best foot forward always. I did finally choose a career, but it was in crime scene technology.

I don’t know that my philosophy is interdisciplinary, but it could be. I think doing a good job is important, so I think no matter what my profession it would be interdisciplinary if I choose it to be.

My career goals have changed to a different major, after going through this course I decided it really wasn’t for me. It’s not a bad thing, just not where I want to go with my career. In a way this course showed me where I should be going

  3. 1. I haven’t had many jobs yet, but my personal philosophy concerning my professional life is to never give up your dreams. If you want something bad enough, keep working at it until you get it.

    2. This philosophy is interdisciplinary because if you want something bad enough you will do whatever it takes to get there and you can use many of the skills you’ve learned to help you get to where you want to be.

    3. My career goals have altered because I have always been unsure of what kind of career I want to pursue. Lately, I have been leaning towards doing something in the medical field.

  4. @Deb- I agree that you should do whatever it takes to get the job done. This is a great quality to have that will move you up in the work field.

@Robin- I've been changing my major around a lot as well, but I think this class has started to point me in the right direction.

  6. @Deb - I like how you are also using your education for volunteer work. I think most people go into school looking just with the hopes of career advancement

  7. Hello everyone,

My personal philosophy for my professional life is similar to some of yours. My philosophy is to strive to always do my best work in whatever task I am assigned and to never stop learning. I think the best way for me to achieve my personal and professional goals is to continually educate myself, be it through formal courses at the university, on-the-job training, reading books and manuals, or talking to and interviewing co-workers.

My career goals have altered many times. I wanted to work in television production, as an actress, as a massage therapist, child life specialist, Naturopathic Doctor, etc. What I know for sure is that I want to work in a therapeutic environment providing counseling and other services to women and girls to help them overcome various mental health issues like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc.

I think my next move may be to work for a while and then return to school to complete my master's in mental health counseling.

@Robin - What major are you changing to? How will this be more aligned with your future goals? I wish you the best!

  8. 1. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life is putting forth my best efforts in acheiving my goals, and being the best I can be. Some of my philosophies...What doesn't kill you makes you stronger! No pain, no gain. And one of my favorites from the Marines, "Pain is weakness leaving the body."

    2. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?
I have an interdisciplinary philosophy because I believe everyone uses knowledge from more than one discipline in every career. The more one knows about various fields, the more successful they will be because they will have a broader 'knowledge database' and will be able to think of multiple ways to solve problems from more than one point of view.

    3. My career goals have altered considerably. When I was in high school I began considering different careers I would like to go to college for. I originally was considering becoming a dental hygenist. After much thought and research, I decided to leave that idea and major in business. I enjoy helping people with their finances and thought I might like to become a bank manager. After I reseached that idea, I felt it wasn't the job for me. I then changed my major to elementary education. After nearly completing that degree I was offered my dream job from the state of Florida working for Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission division of Law enforcement. I was always interested in law enforcement (but didn't want to work on the street) and wanted to do something to help the environment. There really is no specific degree to get for this job except maybe criminal justice. Getting hired with FWC is very hard because there are so many applicants. I didn't want to get my degree in criminal justice for one job that I probably wouldn't get. I wasn't really interested in working in any other law enforcement position. I ended up getting hired on and I'm really enjoying my career so far. I switched my degree to IDS so I was able to use my business and education credits. IDS is great, and I wish I would have known about this degree sooner because it allows the student to study more than one discipline which is useful for many reasons which I won't get into right now because I could write a whole paragraph on that alone! :)

  9. @Josh....
If you are at all interested in doing something in the medical field I think it's a wise choice. Not only are you helping people, and making good money, but you will always have a job! What helped me decide on whether or not I wanted to pursue a career in a certain field was to go on job shadows and spend the day with someone that is doing what you are interested in. You can pick their brain and get to see first hand if it's something you are still interested in. Good luck!

  10. 1.) I haven't had much job experience either, however,
@DebTanner I do agree with what you said in terms of doing whatever it takes to get the job done. I guess I would also make that my philosophy.

2.) I would say that yes, my philosophy would be interdisciplinary. Be able to put a lot of work into it, do your research/find the facts, and use whatever talents you may have.

3.)How have my career goals altered? Well, at first I wanted to do film, so I was thinking of making that a major, then take courses for that, but I decided I wanted to do game design. I wanted to do mainly the modeling and 3D graphics part, but since I decided to take a major related to that a little too late, I scrapped that and decided I would rather break into the video game industry as a writer. My ultimate goal is to become a producer/executive producer, as I have grandiose but REALISTIC visions of becoming a top-dog one day (lol). I just need to get as much writing knowledge as I can, and put some work experience into the mix before I can break in and work my way to the top.

  11. @Jennifer - I changed to Criminal Justice. I plan on going into probation

  12. My professional philosophy has been to do the best work possible no matter what. I have worked in retail to pay my way threw college, but even though I do not plan on moving up in the companies I have worked in, I have been offered promotions several times. I have declined them because my career objectives are elsewhere. But if I start being a good employee now, I will continue the same habits in my future career.

I guess my philosophy is interdisciplinary because one must be hardworking in order to be a inter-disciplinarian.

My career objectives have not change since I changed to IDS. I am currently getting ready for graduate school. I can't wait to finish school and start working in my field.

  13. @Charlie- you should definitely try to get an internship. I have discovered that the best way to move up in those types of careers is to have connections. You have to get your foot in the door.

@Josh- What exactly in the medical field are you looking into. You should shadow as many health professionals as possible, it will really help make the decision easier. That is how I decided on occupational therapy.

Seems to be a common thread in all the philosophical statements to do the best we can. That is so important in today's job market. Unions are still active in several local companies, mine included. You cannot imagine how many times over the years I've heard the comment, "It's not my job." I was in the machine shop and picked up a small mechanical part I had designed to take it to my desk when a guy told me he had to carry it to the door for me, because I was in the shop. When I asked him why he said it was for safety purposes. I told him that if it was dangerous for me to carry the part he should go ahead and take it to my desk. He said that wasn't his job. His job was just to move it across the shop floor. Go figure!

Like you I wish I had known about IDS sooner. I lucked out because my 3 areas of study are working together, but it was just luck. A person really couldn put together a strong trio of study if they started with a difinite goal or path in mind.

  16. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life is to make sure that every day at work I am loving my career. Happiness comes fist, because I can then be more successful. Since I want to open a nonprofit organization, my philosophy is very strong: have a good attitude, never give up, make an impact, work my hardest, and make things happen. That might seem a little vague, but it is all very important to me, My philosophy is interdisciplinary because it uses many different beliefs and initiatives to overall achieve success with my job. My career goal have only altered in the sense of what I would like my nonprofit organization to focus on. I have so many ideas that I really want to open numerous organizations but I know that a successful business takes time, dedication, attention, and persistence.

  17. @ Jazmin- I am also working towards getting into grad school. It really stresses me out though because I don't know what I would do if I don't get into the program that I want/need.

@ Robin- I'm glad that this course helped you to realize a change of heart.

  18. 1. I’m not sure if my personal philosophy is also my personal and professional ethics. But for this exercise I’ll say they are. So I say my philosophy is to respect people, to work hard and be positive. To give my all and be passionate about making a difference in other peoples lives.

    2. I think that by wanting to make a difference in other peoples lives I can utilize all the knowledge from my areas of interest and my minor as well as my personal and professional experiences. Also I think that depending of the situation in my career I’ll be able to take my knowledge and help a wider variety of individuals.
    3. They have changed as the years past but I think this is a positive thing. I belive that change is always good even when we make mistakes since we learn from them and that is why I try to change as things change around me. Things have changed in my life as it was the birth of my son and so I had to change and accommodate my priorities to continue my education as well as dedicating my family the time they deserve.

  19. @ Jennifer Hickel

I’m a true believer in that all the experiences and situations we go though in life have happened for a reason and it seems that as your life has changed so have your goals and aspirations. Wanting to be mental health counselor is wonderful and it takes someone who is open minded and has a strong and diverse background to successes in this field, I also wish you the best good luck.

I really like that you put your happiness first I also loved all the other things you mention to be part of your philosophy especially when you say to never give up.

  21. @ Luisa - Thank you. I wish you the best as well! I am grateful for all of the changes in my life because, like you said, it has given me a diverse background of knowledge and experiences from which to draw from. I admire your dedication to your family and your ability to balance school and family. What are you interested in pursuing as a future job/career?

@ Heidi - Your philosophies are hardcore!! I like your style! LOL But seriously, I am glad you got your dream job working for the FWC. What is it that you enjoy about your job so much? What are some of your roles and responsibilities? Thanks for sharing!

  22. 1. How have you used your interdisciplinarity in your professional life?
I intend to use it when I open a nonprofit organization.

    2. What has been your professional history?
I have worked at Dunkin Donuts Baskin Robins for about 5 years working a cake decorator, a donut maker, and working the register as a shift leader.

    3. What are your strongest and weakest job skills?
Strongest- putting my all into what I do
    Weakest- patience

    4. What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
I just have to put time into having patience. I think I could definitely improve on my impatience with some time.

    5. Identify two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.

    6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
Association of Fundraising Professionals and Nonprofit Management Student Association

    7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
9. How have your career goals altered?

  23. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life is to always work hard and to make whoever I am working under job easier. As long as I always do the right thing and more will continue to move up in whatever job I have. I will combine my knowledge and skills to help solve everyday problems
My philosophy is interdisciplinary because it uses many different ideas.
    My career goals haven't altered.

  24. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life is to always look at a situation from numerous aspects. I believe you cannot fully comprehend something until you've seen it from several angles. It is much like a controversial play in sports. Sometimes it takes the referee several camera angle replays before he makes the right call. This is my personal professional philosophy.
This philosophy is interdisciplinary because it involves taking different angles and make the right decision. Many times people make a rash decision without seeing things from a different perspective. Viewing things from different angles to make a right decision makes this interdisciplinary.
My career goals have altered because I realized I no longer want to become a teacher. I believe they are extremely important to our society but I do not believe that this is my path currently. At first, I wanted to so much to make a difference in the lives of a young child but I now realize I can do that without suffering financially.
