For this week’s topic of conversation we will be discussing the meaning and purpose of the e-Portfolio and what each one of you want yours to become. The e-Portfolio is something that is a work-in-progress as you journey to your destination of graduation and beyond. This project is something that encompasses who each one of you are and also who you would like to be. It tells your story and you get to decide how that story will be presented, whether it be for potential graduate schools, current employers, future employers, or maybe eventually it will become a sort of personal portfolio of your accomplishments to look back on fondly as you go on to achieve even more. Even though most of you still have some time before you graduate, it is still wise to envision what you want your e-Portfolio to become and revise it along the way. The e-Portfolio is a terrific tool that will help you show-off your interdisciplinary skills of integrating multiple disciplines and ideas together effectively and most certainly aid you in reaching the goals you have set forth for yourself.
Now it’s your turn to answer a few questions about this week’s topic:
1. How will your e-Portfolio demonstrate your interdisciplinarity?
2. What is the audience/purpose you’re thinking of using?
3. How would you envision your e-Portfolio looking like? What would you like to stand out?
4. What things are you thinking could be used as evidence?
Have a great week! :)
1. My e-Portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity by showing how my three areas of study come together to give me a broad perspective from which to view the Environmental issues I hope to volunteer my services for. My Chemistry and Engineering background combined with a minor in Cultural Anthropology gives me considerable insight into the problems our state is encountering. Trying to preserve the natural beauty and history while allowing development and continued population growth is a delicate balancing act.
ReplyDelete2. My audience is any panel in charge of volunteer situations that help with conservation and environmental issues, such as groups used to do botanical and animal studies in the Everglades, water testing, non-native plant removal, non-native animal removal, species counts, etc. I particularly want them to get the message that Florida's terrain does not intimidate me. I grew up in it, with all its beauty and its dangers. I'm aware of the risks of trekking through woods and swamps. I know what to watch for, and what to respect.
3. I'd like a professional e-Portfolio that highlights my career in Engineering and my Chemistry education so that people will recognize me as a professional. My Anthropology studies have guided me in the direction of conservation and preservation due to the tremendous respect I have developed for cultures other than my own, both from the past and in the present. In Florida, we've been entrusted with caring for the Everglades and all the land that contributes to its well being. It is a unique area like no other on this earth. We need to look at where we have been, the mistakes that have been made, put forth tremendous effort to fix what man has broken and vow not to make those mistakes again.
4. The evidence is the hard part for me. I don't quite make the connection between petty artifacts and what someone might be interested in reading about my qualifications. I have pictures and tokens from experiences, trips and club memberships, but who really cares about them? Maybe someone can help me have a more positive outlook for this one. I don't get it.
1. My e-Portfolio demonstrates my interdisciplinarity by showing all the different disciplines and classes that I have studied. It will also help prove how I integrate my focus and areas and my minor.
ReplyDelete2. My audience is graduate school admissions. My purpose is to prove that I will be a quality graduate student. Also, I want to show how much I need and want to go to graduate school.
3. I envision my e-Portfolio to look like a comprehensive written representation of my college undergraduate career. I definitely want my career aspirations to stand out because I think a lot of people can appreciate nonprofit organizations, and I really intend on starting one up.
4. I’m with Deb on this one. I don’t fully understand the evidence concept.
1. My e-portfolio demonstrates my interdisciplinarity by showing how each course I have taken in a specific area contributes to the other two. Education, Behavioral Social Sciences, and Mass Media Communication go hand in hand more than I previously thought. I would like my e-portfolio to showcase how they intertwine to give the person reading it a better understanding of what it is to be interdisciplinary.
ReplyDelete2. My audience will be a potential employer and eventually graduate school admissions. My goal is to show my drive and purpose for the position I am looking to acquire. I want the reader to understand the importance and the effort I am willing to put forth to attain my dream job.
3. I envision my e-portfolio really resonating with the reader. I would like it to be very emotion driven and not so business like. Although, it will be very professional, I do want to come off as a real person and hopefully that will stand out. I would truly like my e-portfolio to separate itself from all others so I am fresh in the mind of the reader.
4.I suppose I would use my diploma, past portfolios, and teacher recommendations as evidence.
1. My e-portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity by showcasing the activities I’ve been involved in. It will also show how well I integrate my areas of study and hubbies. My job experience, internships and externships show how my areas of study are integrated to help me succeed in a professional setting.
ReplyDelete2. Since I already got accepted into graduate school, the audience I want to focus on is future employers. My e-portfolio can show potential employers why my interdisciplinarity would make me an important asset to their business.
3. I envision my e-portfolio being short and to the point. I believe in quality, not quantity. I want to include the most important things to me. I want it to be fresh and easy to look at and navigate throw.
4. My degree and resume should be strong evidence supporting my interdisciplinarity. I think those are the two most important documents that show my skills and knowledge.
My portfolio will include the many classes I have taken in my areas of study. I will also incorporate how my previous degree in Crime Scene Technology can also be incorporated. It will show my internship that I am starting at Orange County Department of Corrections.
ReplyDeleteI am not completely sure who my audience will be. It would be either a potential employer or graduate school. It will just depend what my place finally become after I finish my bachelor’s degree.
I would like my portfolio to stand out by show casing my diverse areas of study as well as my previous experiences I have gone through in life. I would like my educational accomplishments to stand out most.
I don’t have a lot to show for evidence right now as I have not taken many classes here at UCF. I would use papers I have written, research projects (if any) I have worked on, picture of my badge from the Department of Corrections and finally my degree(s).
@guy – I like how you suggested using teacher recommendations; that’s one thing I didn’t even think about.
ReplyDelete@Jazmin – congratulations on getting accepted to graduate school. I agree the portfolio should be to the point. I don’t think employers want to read through a ton of information
1. My e-Portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity by showing how my areas/minor can be integrated together. It will show all the different classes that I have taken for my different areas of study and how they relate.
ReplyDelete2. The audience I’m thinking of using is graduate schools. I want to show them what areas I studied, the classes I have taken, and why I would be worthy of them accepting me to their school.
3. I envision my e-Portfolio looking very extensive and highlighting all of my qualities. Other than showing my academic achievements, I want it to show my other accomplishments and prior experiences that I’ve been through. What I want to stand out is my qualities and experiences that separate me from everyone else.
4. All I could really use for evidence right now is pictures, awards, and my diploma Once I graduate, I can use my degree.
@Guy- I think teacher recommendations would be really good evidence for graduate schools and future employers.
ReplyDelete@Jazmin- I agree that your e-Portfolio should show how your areas can be integrated and separate you from others.
1. My e-portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity by letting the audience know which disciplines were my fields of study. I have also included 'artifacts' as evidence of the different disciplines I have studied.
ReplyDelete2. The audience I want my e-portfolio geared toward is graduate school. I could perhaps tweak it later on for promotional reasons or a new job later on down the road. I am happy in my current career and would like to continue my education through graduate school.
3. I envision my e-portfolio like a big, giant, organized resume plus some! :) It lists all my accomplishments (both educational and professional) and allows me to go into more detail about my educational background than a regular resume would. It allows the audience to really get to find out more about me. I want my e-portfolio to stand out in a way that represents who I am and what I'm capable of.
4. Artifacts such as pictures, copies of work, etc. can be used as evidence. For myself, I would like to use more pictures because my job is interesting and I think it would capture my audience's attention!
-Heidi Simons
@Deb Tanner-I really like what you are planning on doing with your e-portfolio. It sounds like your volunteer work is very interetsing! As far as the artifacts for evidence, I think if you were to include pictures of the things you are doing (such as having an impact through your conservation efforts in the Everglades) that might catch your audience's attention and make them take more of an interest in reading about who you are and what you want to accomplish. :)
ReplyDeleteHello everyone,
ReplyDeleteSounds like you all have great plans so far for your e-portfolios. You are all off to a good start and will definitely have time to develop and refine your e-portfolio to your exact specifications before graduation. I am in the process of finishing my e-portfolio now. My plan is to use my e-portfolio to supplement my resume and application for graduate school. I am thinking about applying for a master's degree program in mental health counseling. Therefore I want my e-portfolio to reflect how my undergraduate education, personal and professional experiences have prepared me to be successful in graduate school and how they contribute to my overall career goal of working in a therapeutic manner with women and girls.
@ Deb and Leah: To me, the evidence you include in your e-portfolio serves to support the things you are writing about. I like pictures because it gives a visual of the things you are describing.
@ Jazmin: Congratulations on your acceptance into graduate school! Where and what will you be studying?
@ Guy: I also want my e-portfolio to show emotion and personality. I think this gives my audience a better representation of the "real me" and helps them to understand the journey of my academic, professional and personal life.
@ Heidi: I apologize if you mentioned it before, but what do you do for work? How will graduate school benefit you in your current job?
Thanks everyone! :)
@Jennifer: Thanks, I got into UF and I will be getting my Masters in Occupational Therapy. I'm really excited! :)
ReplyDelete@Heidi: I agree with you that the e-portfolio is like a big resume, in which you can elaborate more.
@Josh and Heidi: Career services on campus have people that can help you with your academic resume and personal statement for graduate. I was so unsure about my personal statement and Evelyn really helped me.
Best of luck to everyone that is planning on attending graduate school!
@ Heidi- I really like your evidence and I think I could include some of those things in my e-portfolio as well.
ReplyDelete@Josh- My audience is also graduate schools. I think our e-portfolios are a really good way of showing exactly what we have to offer.
@Heidi
ReplyDeleteI should think about the artifacts you could come up with as pictures. You probably have some animal and scenery pics that are really eye catching. That gives me some ideas. Thanks
@Jazmin
ReplyDeleteI think your portfolio might start out short, but as time goes by it will definitely grow. By then you will have some interesting things to show and tell so being longer won't be boring at all. Good luck in grad school!
My e-Portfolio will demonstrate my interdisciplinarity by showing and giving examples of how I applies me degree to daily life, work, and volunteer experiences
ReplyDeleteMost of the time my audience will be a future employer
At first it will probably be shore but over time it will grow and expand.
My evidence could be recommendations and projects I have worked on.
1. How will your e-Portfolio demonstrate your interdisciplinarity?
ReplyDeleteBy showing what I have learned and how I can apply that knowledge in my career.
2. What is the audience/purpose you’re thinking of using?
The audience I'm intending to show this to is that of a place of business. The purpose is to enable me to look more qualified for the job I am applying for.
3. How would you envision your e-Portfolio looking like? What would you like to stand out?
I envision it pretty much having a simple layout, but what I would like to stand out would be my mentioning of my creativity as well as my writing skills.
4. What things are you thinking could be used as evidence?
Past assignments I have worked on, or have contributed to (showing what my part in it was), and my creative works.
1. I think that I would like my e-portfolio to show my capabilities in several disciplines and how I’m able to combine them and be an asset to any company. I also will like my e-portfolio to be my platform towards graduate school by showing scholars my passion and dedication in the field of communication science and education and the bonus of having study human behavior as well.
ReplyDelete2. As I mentioned above my target audience will include scholars and professionals in the field of speech language pathology and audiology as well as future employers.
3. I would like it to be professional but inviting. To be interesting to read and find out more about of what I’ve done in school, in the community as well as professionally. I would also like it to be inspiring for others where they can see that anything you set your mind on is accomplishable.
4. I defiantly will like to include as my evidence my many school projects, pictures and also some testimonials of individuals that along the way I have the pleasure of working with.
@Jazmin peralta I agree with you as far as our portfolio being short and to the point. I think that including your entire life in your portfolio can be somehow distracting and overwhelming for your target audience.
ReplyDelete@Josh ember I also would like to use pictures and my diploma for evidence.
