We appreciate and are proud of all of the hard work and information you have provided us about yourselves, including your academic, personal, and professional goals and achievements! However, before you pat yourselves on the back for a semester well done, we ask that you finish strong and contribute fully to this last blog posting.

The questions are as follows:

2. What has been your professional history?

4. What can you do to develop and improve upon your weak skills?
5. Identify two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to your chosen career.
6. How have internship or externship helped your professional development?
7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.
8. How is or isn't this philosophy interdisciplinary?

Thank you again for your hard work and diligence this semester! We wish you the best throughout your academic career at UCF and into the future!

  1. 1. I use interdisciplinarity in your professional life everyday. Being a wildlife officer, I integrate law enforcement with knowledge about wildlife. I enjoy using knowledge from more than one discipline...it keeps things exciting!

    2. My professional history has been being a full time student at UCF as well as having a full time job in law enforcement. Prior to that I was a full time student at Seminole Community College (now Seminole State College) and worked in a couple of different restaurants as a server. I've also volunteered for a group called "Washback Watchers" in Volusia County. Volunteers go out and search for juvenile sea turtles that have washed back onto shore after a bad storm.

    3. My strongest job skill would be reliability and hard working. I'm someone that is dependable and will help you out if you need it. My weakest job skill would probably be my sense of direction. When I learn an area I get really good at knowing the in's and out's of that area. If I'm in an unfamiliar area, I tend to get lost easily without technology such as GPS and the internet.

    4. Something I can do to develop and improve upon my weak skills would be to take note of and pay extra attention to where I'm at and where I've been. I'm also in the process of reading a wilderness survival book so hopefully that will give me some helpful tips also.

    5. Two professional clubs or organizations that are useful to my chosen career would be (as mentioned before) "Washback Watchers" of Volusia County. They are concerned with the sea turtles and volunteer to help protect sea turtle nests from poachers as well as rescue the juvenile sea turtles that become washed onto shore after a bad storm (hurricane season in particular). The second organization that is useful to my career would be Busch Wildlife in Jupiter, FL. They take in sick and injured animals and have helped me out tremendously.

    6. I have not had the opportunity to have an internship or externship to aid me in my professional development, however, I have went on "ride alongs" before I got hired on with my current job to learn more about it. I found that very useful.

    7. Discuss your personal philosophy concerning your professional life.

I'm pretty sure we did this question in a previous blog, but to sum up my personal philosophy concerning my professional life is to work hard at whatever you are doing. Also, love what you are doing and it will seem like less work to work hard. :) One of my favorite Bible verses is Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men..."

    8. My philosophy includes interdisciplinity because I believe that no matter what career you choose you will always need and use knowledge from more than just one discipline.

    9. My career goals have altered because I'm happy in the career that I'm in now, but through this class, I have had the opportunity to research more about graduate school and what place that will take in my future plans. I'm still trying to decide which direction I will take in graduate school.

  2. 1. I really haven't. My professional life has been Mechanical Engineering.
    2. I started as a Jr. Drafter for a laser company and worked my way up to Sr. Mechanical Engineer at Lockheed Martin.
3.My strongest job skill is my leadership capability and my weakest is my lack of tact.
    4. I take classes to be more politically correct and less direct.
    5. ASME, the American Society of Mech Eng and ANSI,the American National Standards Institute.
    6. I haven't done either.
    7. Work hard. Never say, "That's not my job." Do it if you can. Volunteer for positions that are out of your comfort zone. Take a risk.
    8. In my field it isn't.
    9. They haven't but my retirement goals have. That's when I'll use my interdisciplinarity.

  3. 1. I have not really been interdisciplinary in my work. However, I just started working in an internship with the county teaching inmates’ life skills. In this position I can utilize knowledge I have with training (teaching) and things I’ve learned in criminal justice.
    2. I have really not had any careers, just jobs. I’ve worked in many fields such as hospitality, health care and several clerical jobs
    3. My strongest is my ability to work with others easily. I can work independent or in a group. I like working with other people the most. My weakest is delegating work. I tend to “hog” the work, because I usually have a vision of how it should be done.
    4. Try to delegate more work responsibility
    5. Two professional clubs: American Society of Criminologist and Association of State Correctional Administration
    6. I just started an internship with the county that I believe has given me a perspective on what I want to pursue.
    7. I believe putting your best foot forward the first time. I believe in putting your best ability in all that you do
    8. I don’t know that my philosophy is interdisciplinary, but it could be. I think doing a good job is important, so I think no matter what my profession it would be interdisciplinary if I choose it to be.
    9. I have decided to change my major, I just don’t think this was what I was looking for.

  4. @Deb - I like your philosophy of dont say that's not my job. I heard that more times I can count from "younger" co-workers

@Heidi - I'm glad to hear you like what you do; and good luck with grad school

  5. Heidi, thank you for mentioning it and thank you to all of you ladies who answered the questions anyway, but I just realized that the last 3 questions (7, 8, 9) are repeated from last week's blog. Sorry. Those who have not responded yet can just ignore those questions and answer the first 6. Thanks!

  6. @ Robin - I can relate to "hogging" all of the work. I have a tendency to be controlling and sometimes feel that "if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself". However, I have found that this tactic and attitude have often brought me unnecessary stress and doesn't make me a very good team player. I am working on learning to delegate work and trust in other's abilities and work ethic to effectively complete assigned tasks.

@ Heidi - Thank you for sharing more about your work. It sounds exciting and that you really enjoy what you are doing. I love turtles, especially the babies, and I thank you for your work with and dedication to the "Washback Watchers"! I too strive to work according to Colossians 3:23 and it helps me to keep everything in perspective.

  7. @Jennifer - yea,I have the same philosophy - gotta do it myself or I'll have to redo it

  8. 1. I haven't used it yet, but will when I become an Occupational Therapist :)
    2. I interned at Florida Hospital the summer of 2009 in the pastoral care department. I have done two externships with Occupational therapists. I've worked in retail since high school.
    3. My strongest job skill is that I am hardworking. My weakest is that I like things done my way.
    4. In order to improve my weak skills, I need to trust that others will get the job done correctly.
    5. The American Occupational Therapy Association and the Student Occupational Therapy Association.
    6. Internships and externships have helped me gain a better understanding about the medical world and occupational therapy. They also helped me get into graduate school.
    7. My personal philosophy is that, when you enjoy what you do, you will never work another day of your life : )
    8. I don't think it is either, or both maybe.
    9. My career goals haven't really altered. I know I want to be an OT and will be starting graduate school this Fall!!

  9. @Heidi- I love the verse that you used. I think we should also do the best that we can, and be an example to others.

@jennifer- I understand were you are coming from. I prefer to work by myself than in a group. I'm pretty good at being the leader in the group and assigning people their parts, but it gets annoying when people don't put their share.

  14. @Steven- Your personal philosophy is a good one. Don't let this rotten job market and the economy change it. Good things will come to you with that philosophy. Maybe not in the time frame you'd like but they will come. Hang in there and hope for better times.

  15. @Leah- Patience is a learned virtue. It's like most other things in life, the more you practice it the better you get. Some people are naturally inclined towards being patient and then there are those of us who only get better through experience. I'm still practicing and I raised 3 kids!

  16. 1. I haven’t really used my interdisciplinarity in my professional life because I haven’t worked much since I started college.
    2. My professional history includes working at Publix and being a tennis instructor. Right now I am just a full time student at UCF.
    3. My strongest job skills are being reliable, hardworking, and responsible. My weakest area would be having to do things the way I’m not used to doing them.
    4. I can improve upon my week skills by just listening to what I’m told to do and do keep practicing them.
    5. Two professional clubs that are useful in my chosen career are Biochemistry/Pharmacology Club and the pharmaceutical sciences club.

    7. My personal philosophy concerning my professional life would be to work hard at whatever you are doing. If you really want to get to a certain job position, just keep working at it.
    8. This philosophy is interdisciplinary because it requires you to integrate all of your skills to move up to a higher place in the work field.
    9. My career goals have altered because I had no idea what I wanted to do before taking this class. Now I no what I want to concentrate on and I have an idea of what I want to do.

  19. @ jazmin peralta

I like what you say about enjoying what you do and not seeing it as just a job. I agree if you are truly passionate and love what you do it will no longer seem like work.

    @ Leah Mason
I don’t see your philosophy vague at all I think that is the complete opposite. Employers look for individuals like you that like what they do and have good working ethics. As someone that wants to open a nonprofit organization this skills are necessary you will have to work very hard to get people to help you on your endeavors.

  22. I use interdisciplinarity in my life by looking at situations from several perspectives before I make a decision
My professional history involves a lot of sales and working with people.
My strongest skills are communication and my weakest skills might be time management
I will continue to improve on my weakness by effectively using planners and alarm clocks.
I have not been a member of any clubs but there is a Public Relations group that I am interested in.
I have not started an internship as of yet.
My personal philosophy works hand and hand with my future professional life. I am applying the same thought process to both.
It is interdisciplinary because I am using my personal life and professional life to better my overall life.
My career goals altered because I realized I want to work in Public Relations and not in Education at the moment.
